Federation with Lync online/Office 365 not working [SOLVED]
So you've set up federation from Lync on premise with Lync online according to the guides:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj205126.aspx
You check your Lync control panel and everything looks perfect. This is a no brainer, right?
But federation is still not working.
When you try to IM an O365 user you get no presence and IM cannot be sent.
There is possibly a simple solution to this.
Open your Lync topology builder and download the topology.
Check if you have IPv6 enabled on your external interface on the edge server.
If you do, disable it and publish the topology.
(I also disabled IPv6 on the external edge NIC)
Give Lync some time to replicate and try to IM an O365 user again.
This time it will work.
So what pointed me to this conclusion?
Well after checking the log file from the on premise lync client i found a winsock error message saying that sipfed.online.lync.com could not be reached.
Then i noticed that the IP address was in IPv6 format.
I'm not sure why O365 does not allow IPv6 but sure enough disabling IPv6 made it work.
Bug or feature? Who knows.
In this article i found the following: Exchange Online currently supports only IPV4 and not IPV6 addresses.
